Marissa Lewis-Peart is the Co-founder of an early-stage start-up, Bluum, which aims to simplify the curly hair care journey and experience for women who care for textured hair.
She is also an award-winning Graphic Designer, Public Speaker, and Influencer from Bristol with a passion for improving experiences for people. In 2019 Marissa was awarded the Ben Martin Apprentice Award where she attended South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas - the world’s largest interactive media conference festival, and delve into learning about how brands are evolving while immersing herself into the future of design and creative tech. Marissa has also been awarded a scholarship on the 2020 Social Capital Network programme funded by Google. Outside of work, Marissa runs a natural hair care YouTube Channel where she educates black women on textured hair care, encouraging them to embrace their natural curls and coils. She works with brands to review products, host events and also attends events as a guest speaker.
How did Marissa fine the programme?
“Being on the Back Her Business course was a really nice experience where I had the opportunity to meet with like-minded women weekly and share our successes, obstacles, or worries in a safe environment. I had attended another business course earlier in the year, however, BHB is where my confidence in my business really grew and left me feeling ready to actually take the next steps in my entrepreneurship journey.
I found the modules about finance most useful and the worksheets that Bobbi provided, such as the pricing calculator, were just what I needed to break my goals down into manageable steps. My advice for the next cohort would be to try to complete the weekly tasks that are set as soon as possible after each session as it’s very easy to fall behind once work, business, and general life resume, however at the end of the course, you will feel better prepared to move forward due to completing those tasks so it’s definitely worth it.”
